General information
North Dalmatia is one of several Croatian coastal regions. It extends from the southern part of Pag island in the north-west to the cape Planka (2 km from Rogoznica) in the south-east. It comprises the coastal area of the Zadar and Sibenik-Knin counties and their larger towns (Zadar, Biograd na moru, Vodice, Sibenik, Primosten, Rogoznica), the hinterland (Benkovac, Knin, Drnis) and islands (Pag, Silba, Premuda, Dugi otok, Ugljan, Iz, Pasman, the Kornati islands, Murter, Zlarin, Prvic, Zirje...). North Dalmatia is easily reachable, especially by plane since Zadar has its own airport but depending on your starting pointy, you could also fly to Split or Zagreb and then travel to this region. Besides by plane, this region is also easily reachable by car, bus, train or even by ship. North Dalmatia has good transport infrastructure and the cities Zadar and Sibenik are directly connected with other Croatian cities. The islands are easily accessible thanks to the frequent ferry lines. This region is the most developed part of the Adriatic Sea with more than 500 islands and islets, numerous straits, channels and hidden coves. In the area of northern Dalmatia, you can enjoy crystal clear turquoise waters, lovely lakes, rolling plains and rocky mountains. North Dalmatia is home to three national parks and three parks of nature which makes this region extremely rich in natural attractions and historical sites such as Forum, St Donatus’ Church, St Anastasia’s Cathedral in Zadar and Cathedral of St. James in Šibenik which is under UNESCO protection.
Northern Dalmatia has typical Mediterranean climate with warm summers and mild winters but it is strongly defined by the winds (yugo and bura).
Main characteristic of Dalmatian cuisine is use of fresh ingredients, simple preparation seasoned with Mediterranean herbs thanks to which all dishes from this region get special aroma and taste. Mediterranean cuisine is among the healthiest in the world which is rather expected since it involves lots of fish, vegetables and olive oil. When in Dalmatia do not miss to try grilled fish, black risotto, Dalmatian pasticada and Dalmatian prosciutto. Dalmatian cuisine is ideal for everybody looking for a new experience and adventures.
